I just started Social Security retirement payments on Jan 1, 2017. My first check was paid to me in February, for January. My 2nd check was paid to me in March, for February, etc., etc.. I understand that my SS checks that I receive each month are really for the prior month.

OK, here is my question: Are the Medicare Part-B deductions also for the prior month?

No, Medicare Part B deductions are for the current month.

Thank you.

It just seems a bit strange to me. I'm sure there is a good reason but I just don't see it ????

It's just like with any insurance company -- you pay in advance.

I guess that makes sense. Thanks again.

Are you currently on Medicare? If so, your first Social Security payment after signing up for Medicare should have included deductions for two months' worth of Medicare premiums.

Sometimes Medicare will bill you for three months' worth of premiums at a time. That's what happened to me. I signed up for Social security and for Medicare B at the same time. Medicare billed me while Social Security deducted the premiums from my SS payments. I worried about not being covered by Medicare if I didnt pay the bill so I went ahead and paid it, knowing that, eventually, I'd be reimbursed for those premiums. And I was -- it took only a few months for them to get straightened out.

@TFW46

Your situation was identical to mine.

I was paying "quarterly" before Jan of this year. My last payment (in January) was for Feb-Mar-Apr so I had already paid for the first FOUR months of this year. They sent me a hard-copy check for three months, which has now squared things between us, now that I have the info you gave me. Yes, they were finally able to straighten things out -- didn't have to call them, which is always a plus.

People, my wife included, kept telling me that SS & Medicare would "self-correct". I had my doubts but I am pleasantly surprised -- they were right!

Thank you. You saved me from calling SS/Medicare to ask about a non-problem.

You know, this must be a very common situation, where someone is being billed for three months of Medicare at a time, before going on Social Security. Glad to see SS/Medicare can self-correct. Gives me a bit more faith in the government.
