Dumbest thing: not buying Apple way back when it was $20. Or maybe it was squandering an inheritance worth a small fortune. Or maybe it was not applying myself in high school. Or maybe it was.... hmmm, too many things to choose from.

Smartest thing: making peace with all the dumb things I have done, and finding contentment with the life I have.

"Smart" and "dumb" are really only clear in hindsight. Had I not done some of the dumb things, I wouldn't have had the life experience that makes me who I am today. Life is not always a straight line; the detours teach us who we are.

My kids were on top of the AAPL thing. Invested their College loan equivalent into AAPL (@ $17/share), Google and Netflix. Consolidated College loan at 2.7% for 20 yrs Live happily ever after (for a season... ) They were buying a lot more AAPL in Oct for $106, but were OUT at $145.

They learned a lot from mistakes managing their stocks at age 12 (listening to me...)

I worked for Carrier Corporation in Syracuse, NY for 25 years. When things were getting shaky and many layoffs and rumors of layoffs in Syracuse, I asked if I could move to the Tyler, TX plant if there was an opening. I was given the approval to do that. Since it was something I wanted to do, I moved at my own expense. I had applied, interviewed (on phone) for job, hired, and given a start date. I arrived a week before start of work, was told to get my TX affairs taken care of (insurance, etc.) so I wouldn't need time off once I started work. That Friday I received a phone call, sorry job no longer available. Freeze on hiring.

Yes, I was totally caught off guard and quite angry. But I survived.

That's horrible. If you'd thought of it, you probably could have got at least two weeks' salary out of it. (I worked for a while in a law office, and some unfortunate young lady had moved and bought a car in anticipation of the new job. My boss got her two weeks' salary. A small comfort, but better than nothing.)

I had applied and was hired by an engineering company in LA county. They contacted me the week before I was to start, told me they'd be happy to have me, but I'd be laid off three days after I started. Did I want to take a position in San Diego instead? A nano-second of thought later, I replied, "Of course!". I've been here (not with the same company the whole time) ever since.

Back on topic, my smartest thing was (a) delaying some years to go to university until I understood the value of it, tied with (b) driving my BIL's car from Chicago to California, and then staying.

My dumbest thing . . . too many to count!

Dumbest: Being a Pepsi fiend for 30-some years. Not finishing college. Trying to maintain a decent relationship with my mother.

Uh oh...at the moment I can't think of a smartest. I'll come back when something occurs to me -- lol.
