As you may know, SSA stumbled when it first tried to implement "2 factor" sign-in for mySocialSecurity account access, allowing only cellphone texts as second factor.
Starting June 10, they are restarting 2FA, but with choice of e-mail or cellphone text this time ( like most other 2FA's work)
Yes, problematic for those of us overseas. At least we can opt for email now.
It isn't really a problem, we use two factor authentication for almost all our financial accounts now.
Just sign up for Google Voice and use the phone number they give you. Reading texts you receive is completely country agnostic and can be done in a browser at voice.google.com. You can also set it up to forward texts to your gmail account.
