Mine's whatever the maximum is for a given year.

Now, if I just knew how long I was going to live.

I don't get the big deal, either you want to answer it or you don't.Unfortunately I'll have to wait about 15 years to answer this so I'll make sure to come back in 15 years with an update lol

I think it matters not, since so many people have other sources of income these days. Thank goodness, I am one of them.

OP, if you haven't already done so, you can go to the Social Security website, create an account, and find out how much you would receive in benefits depending on which year (age) you retire. I've never looked at the site for info re: survivor benefits, but I suspect you could find it there. There's a ton of info on the SS site. https://www.ssa.gov/

By the way, I'm not retired yet, but am seriously considering doing so within the next year. Consequently, questions such as yours are on my mind these days. I'll be meeting soon with my financial advisor (free service of my bank) to see whether retirement is feasible for me. Do you have a financial advisor who can help you?

Good luck!

Edited to add: If I were to retire right now (age 63), my SS monthly benefit would be $1499 before taxes. (I'm not sure how much tax is taken out.) It would be almost $400/month more if I were to wait till "full retirement age" of 66, but I'd rather shoot myself in the foot than wait that long.
