Last night I discovered that someone had tried to charge a large purchase to my card, but the bank declined it. Then the thief called my bank, pretending to be me, and my bank listened to them. They asked the bank to allow the charge. The bank was not forthcoming about why they communicated with this person. I can guess the step that prevented them from authorizing the charge. I think the thief had my DOB, which the average online account hacker would not have. Also they knew which bank to call. This seems to be fallout from the Equifax hack.
I did my Security Freezes on 9/8 and the only one I ran into an issue with was Experian and it was not their fault.
When I had finished and was on the "confirmation" page "print for your records" and hit print the computer locked up and I had to restart the computer, when I attempted to go back in to the Experian site I got a message saying that I could not do this online, however...
My printer had already stored the information and I was able to print the security freeze confirmation with a PIN number.
I just do not know for sure if it actually went through.
I also added Fraud Alerts through the Equifax site and they are supposed to notify the other two credit bureaus.
How do you go about verifying that the security freezes and fraud alerts are actually in place?
I've had Credit Karma for years and after I put the fraud alert and credit freeze on they emailed me the next day to verify this. This was todays for the fraud alert.

New Information Was Added To Your Credit Report
It looks like there is a change to your TransUnion credit report.
A new fraud alert was added to your credit report.
Do you recognize this new information?
This information is correct. See my updated report
Something is not quite right. Help me dispute this error

Strike two! Looks like Equifax used the password "admin" on their Argentina website. I would never trust them with their ID protection either. They've already exposed 143 million people with this breach and using the password "admin" just shows they have morons working their security dept.!
Are you certain it was you, not some hacker, who signed up?
I have no idea. I'll call them tomorrow.
I can't think of any reason I would sign up for Transunion... I've never put a fraud alert or freeze on any of my accts. This whole thing is just mind boggling.
I did sign up for fraud alerts through Equifax though.. not that I have much confidence in them.
I just tried to put a fraud alert using Transunion. I gave them all my info and the response I got was 'You already have an acct. with Transunion'..
I don't remember signing up for anything on Transunion...
Now they want me to verify my Id by answering the secret question. "what is your favorite show?"..
I don't even remember when and if I ever signed up there. How am I supposed to remember what my favorite show was.
Good luck. When I ordered my free credit report from Transunion more than a year ago, I saw that it, incorrectly, included an apartment number in my address. Transunion made me furnish, via snail mail, a lot of documentation, not once but four times, to get the address corrected. And, even then, it continued to request more identification. Finally, after 6-7 times of having to mail photo IDs, utility bills, etc, I gave up -- which is exactly what they wanted, so they wouldnt have to correct my account.

Are you sure you didn't sign up for TrueCredit with them years ago? I know I did and caught hell getting in. Could not get into their system for years because somehow they screwed up the answer to my secret question. Somehow bypassed it the other day and was able to do the freeze with them online.

After giving this a lot of thought.. it's possible I signed up in order to get a free credit report through them so maybe that's where the acct. came from. This would have been quite a few years ago when credit reports became free in NY. I have no idea what 'my favorite show' was back then though so I couldn't answer that security question in order to get access to my acct.
At any rate I did sign up through Equifax for my husband and I and put a fraud alert on our accts and they're supposed to notify the other credit reporting agencies. We're still debating whether or not to put a freeze on them though.
Discover has a free service where they monitor use of your social security number for any fraudulent activity so I'm going to sign up for that too.
