In between commitments from a busy consulting practice, I volunteer at the world's busiest airport in Atlanta. I used to have my private pilots license but stopped flying in the 1980s. I love being around airplanes, and the vibrant, exciting atmosphere of an airport. Solving passenger problems is my focus , I and really enjoy helping passengers successfully navigate their way around the airport and their problems. For me, it's the perfect volunteer opportunity.
I would think this would be a paid position. Never heard or saw volunteers at airports.
Anyway, this has been a great thread. Now I have to go back and see what I might like to do. Thanks to all.

In addition to Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL), many other airports have volunteers. Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) have almost 700, Minneapolis St Paul (MSP) also have volunteers that are at their information desks. I'm sure there are others. It's a fun thing to do for volunteers who are aviation buffs!

I'm sure it was a volunteer at DFW who helped direct me to the correct terminal last time I was wandering around looking lost. I much appreciated it!
I have a certified therapy dog and take her to VA hospitals, nursing home and she "reads" with kids with disabilities. I also volunteer at the Senior Center, working desk and helping where needed. For me, being alone, it is necessary to be with other people.
I might look into volunteering at the homeless center, not sure yet.
I read the OP's question as, what do people actually DO in their volunteer jobs, not what are the jobs? I could say I volunteer with therapeutic horseback riding. What I actually do is collect the horse, lead the horse, direct the horse according to the needs of the rider.

Yeah, that seems to be a valid point.
Within my police volunteering I've identified out of state license that have been in California for over a few weeks, expired license plates, unregistered vehicles, graffiti identification and removal, boat and RV storage code violations, abandoned vehicles for towing, removal and reporting of illegal signs, busting up homeless encampments, asset transport to different locations, identifying handicapped parking violations on streets, hospitals and shopping centers and assisting with traffic management around accident or construction sites.
