Just rang Costco and found out that each of their shots is $159 (two required for each of us). Sounds a bit high but we're going in tomorrow to get them anyway. Having seen what a friend of ours is going through with the aftermath of shingles - nerve pain of the worst sort that has rendered one arm nearly useless - I'm not taking any chances.

We've both had the Zostavax and paid $250 each for that in the past. So all in all we will have paid more than a thousand dollars to keep this disease at bay. I don't grudge it because of all the misery I've seen from friends and relatives who contracted shingles.

Day 2 after the Shingrix shot yesterday morning....

Woke up with a little bit of upper arm muscle soreness at the site of the shot. But by the time I was out the door to go to work, it had dissipated and feels okay. No other side effects that I can tell (YMMV).

So for those of you afraid of the shot, don't be. I've found the experience to be extremely tolerable and actually better than when I had a tetanus shot last year.

Okay, I'll climb down from my soapbox now and hope all of you get the inoculation and keep that immune system going strong! Bij

Does everyone have Part D? If you don't, it is not covered at all. Plus, isn't there a yearly deductible under Part D?

I'd think that if you believe you'd find the pain of the shot intolerable you'll really be screaming if you actually get shingles!

So much FEAR surrounding this....and people say they know people who have it etc. I know a lot of older people, and can't think of one person who had "S"...one friend had it about 15 yrs ago due to stress of training a puppy when she was in her later 60's....

I'm 80 soon and thank goodness what I do works. Not spending $1000's for shots.

HUNDREDS...not thousands.

Add up what you spend on all your supplements and alternative medicine treatments, then we can talk.

Well, I don't really think it's fear. I know you are not a proponent of shots, etc., jaminhealth, but I think this is just a case of "there's a prevention out there that is more than 90% effective - it's smart to take advantage."

If you had seen some of the sufferers I've seen with shingles, you'd be wary of contracting it. But you might be lucky and never have to deal with it. Everyone assesses the risk against the cost of prevention and that's each person's choice.

Congratulations on being 80, Jaminhealth.

Did you know that the risk of contracting shingles increases with age starting at around 50, and is highest in the elderly? If you’re fortunate enough to reach your 80th birthday, you stand a one-in-three to one-in-two chance of having shingles. The risk of experiencing chronic pain also increases with age.

I would not want to gamble on those odds at your age. At 80, refusing the vaccine for the prevention of shingles is just plain playing with fire and makes no sense. And believe me, you will feel like you're on fire... for weeks and weeks.

But then as they say, "you can lead a horse to water...."

Also, you need to do some serious fact checking on the cost of Shingrix. You're way off on that.

Patients who do not have insurance coverage may qualify for assistance from GSK to get Shingrix.
