Sometimes I start to think about how much time I have left in life, but my mind can't seem to stay on it. It's as if something is making me distract myself from this thought.
If you do think about this, what kinds of things do you think about?
Today the sun is shining on the West Coast so I'm going to enjoy this day as if it were my last. I haven't found where the expiration date is stamped on anyone so live every day to the fullest since dead is forever.
When we retired at ages 50/51 we moved far away. Met a new neighbor who was just a few years older than us and who were winding down businesses in expectation of retirement. During our first conversation over a few+ glasses of wine, the four of us mused about what our retirement would be like.
My neighbor said, "Seriously, what have we got left....maybe 10 more good years??"
That was 15 years ago. All of us are still kicking....active, travel extensively, good health.
I think about it with every decision I make, more thinking about how many good years I am likely to have (hence retiring about a year earlier than was financially prudent), how many years before I am likely to become frail or be unable to drive, etc. I make plans for what if I get a sudden terminal diagnosis, as I am moving to a state with physician assisted suicide and apparently an excellent hospice service.
Whatever the length of time left me (I turn 65 in April), I am always aware that I have more life behind me than ahead.
Do you ever think about how much time you have left?
almost every day the thought comes to mind - giving me a sense of urgency and I'm in my mid-50's.....I feel like I have to get out and see and do as much as I can while I have the energy.....but I worked in health care (cardiac care) and saw a lot of early demise, so the shortness of life has always been a part of my world/lifeview......
Before I saw the Johnny Cash video "Hurt" for the first time a couple of weeks ago, which is about the most depressing thing I have ever seen, I would only think about it for a couple of seconds about once a year or less. However, discovering that he made that video when he was only 71 -- and he, imo, looks about 90 in it and died only a few months later -- hit me like a the proverbial ton of bricks. When he made that video, he was only seven years older than I am, and that really got to me -- and now it seems like I think about and wonder about how much time I have left a LOT. (Hopefully that kind of thinking will stop soon.)
I don't think about it too deeply nor dwell upon it. I just had a conversation a couple of days ago with a 93 year old relative and we talked about death and it centered on the fact that nobody knows when death will happen, that an airplane can go over our home and loose a wheel that crashes through the roof and we're dead as a result...just like that.
Better things than death to think about .
