It can definitely be done, especially adding monthly social security to the 1/4 of a million.

Many people I know are retiring on that. As long as you have low property taxes and are frugal, it can be done.

Having a pension source would make a huge difference too. The quarter-million will only generate about $10K per year in income at the "old" common withdrawal rate of 4%.

$10K from investment income and $15K from Social Security (OK, this is a SWAG for a low to moderate income career) is not a lot of money to support yourself. A spouse who also had a full time low to moderate income career would bring in an additional $15K, giving the couple $40k annually.

I'm guessing that $250k is looking good for many out there. Millions of near retirement folks have accumulated less, I'm guessing.

If $250k doesn’t include home equity, that’s between 75th and 80th percentile.

$250k will not get you anywhere near a comfortable retirement. even with ~$25k of SS PA. IMHO one needs at least $2m in savings PLUS a paid for home to really not have to worry. Just my Opinion, I could be wrong.....
