She said most diabetics, not all. Some will respond to diet and exercise. Some will have to take meds to control it.

most do respond to diet and exercise , but eventually it gets harder and harder to control via diet and exercise no matter what you do . the older you get the more likely you can't hold the line anymore . my endocrinologist is a diabetes specialist .

he told me years ago i am typical of most diabetics who eat right and do intense exercise . i can put it off and delay some meds but don't be surprised if despite what you do the numbers creep up .

that is exactly what happened . i saw them go up year after year and at 66 they crossed that line .

Actually, you don't really need meat. Plants also provide critical vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

Regarding the discussion of type 2 diabetes, I am reminded of the saying: "Genetics loads the gun, lifestyle pulls the trigger".

My mother in law developed type 2 around 80 years of age, despite being slender and active. So far she's been able to manage it without drugs, but had to give up one of her pleasures-drinking wine.

i like that saying because that is pretty much the case most of the time . in our family diabetes did not just run , it galloped . all my moms sisters and her parents had it .

I agree and I think that goes with most illness and disease too. Perhaps the body ages and completety breaks down and can’t take any more.

We eat meat, but lots of vegs also. We only limit on carbs, which we get through vegs and fruit. Wine and alcohol is a problem too aswe age, so we gave them up to. I drink very little wine when I was in Europe, only when I ate some charcuterie, very rich cheese like head cheese in Italy, then I drink some wine to cut down the fat.

i was a vegan for two years , but it just was not sustainable for me . there is nothing better than a good dead animal on a bbq .

I love BBQ too. That’s why we still eat meat, but the fact that we eat more vegs should outweight the bad. Never understand the whole vegan thing, why can’t people be moderate nowadays. Too many people with dogmatic belief when it comes to food.

Our family curse is rheumatic/arthritic. Strong bones held together with rubber bands. I have had a knee and a shoulder scoped, just got an MRI Friday for the other shoulder and will get results on Tuesday. My brother has had both knees done. My older sister was in a wheelchair with RA; she obviously still has RA, but gets around pretty good with current treatment. My younger sister has some untreated mobility problems due more to money and insurance than anything else. Kind of a tightrope to walk; we do better in good shape but pushing too hard is bad. Losing weight down to a normal BMI was definitely a good idea; I haven't had a major flare in well over a year. I am hopeful I will be able to paddle a long time. It's low impact and with good form there isn't a lot of stress on joints. It's mostly core and large muscles.

There are things in life that are hard to accept and for me gravity has been unkind. We cannot regain our youthful appearance. But many of us can still keep moving and do the best we can to stay limber.
