It's called Yankee Swap. We would do this at our annual holiday party at work. One year I picked my own gift--on purpose!

Thanks, @Reach; I would probably use the link option and just email it to my son and DIL. I know my DIL had a baby shower registry on Amazon as well as at Buy Buy Baby but I just went to the BBB store itself and shopped from the list there

DIL's parents are very limited in their use of the internet; for example, they use email but they didn't know how to attach a photo to an email until I recently showed them how. My son gave them his iPad when he upgraded to a better one last year, but they say it's "too confusing" to "risk" downloading any apps or games, and only use it to access Skype which my DIL was finally able to walk them through using. So although I'm sure I could email them a link to an Amazon wish list I'm not sure if they'd understand what to do with it once they got to that page. They'd have to figure out how and where to buy the item in a local brick and mortar store.

Oops, so sorry, I misunderstood your original word of "it's my birthday" to mean "coincidentally, Christmas (Dec 25th) is my birthday", because the thread topic seemed to be about Christmas gifts in many responses... my bad !!

Please ignore all my resulting Christmas-birthday questions, LOL

I generally buy whatever I "need" but my daughter still wants to do one of two gifts at Christmas. I encourage her to consider something associated with my hobbies and she will usually get my opinion on some of those things.

It was called something different at my office parties. It had a name, but that isn't it. It seems like "steal" was in the name.

We have some kind of Hallmark Holiday every week it seems.. wonder what that is all about.. selling cards ? We are too things focused and not enough people focused
I hope you haven't sucked the fun out of Xmas for your wife.

Personally, I don't care about the presents, but some of my family just dislike everything about Xmas and suck the fun out of it for the people that like the lights, music, cookies, dinners and parties......and token gifts.

I think it is insane to spend copious amounts of money on Xmas. Just on the news tonight they said 25 percent of people still were paying off last Xmas.

I don't want anything, and I would like people to stop expecting it from me. If I want a gift, I'll go buy something for myself.

My wife has that same attitude sometimes - she can't enjoy something unless I pretend to also. She shrugs her shoulders and rolls her eyes about some traditions that make me nostalgic and emotional. That's fine; not everyone has to enjoy it.

Why would they start now that I'm 63?

I buy my own gifts. I cannot remember the last time anyone gifted me with anything. Really.

Anything I want or need I either already have or can go buy it. My wife and I buy each other a few gifts at Christmas but it’s more of a tradition than anything else.
