I guess I missed out as a kid. Lived mostly on Marine Corps bases. When I was a bit older went to the PX with my parents. No 5 and dimes. I’ve never been in a dollar store.
Of course everyone knows that Dollar Tree (where everything is a dollar) is different from a Dollar General or Family Dollar which, while cheap, aren't quite THAT cheap.
I, too, used to take my little allowance to Newberry's and select things from the 5, 10, and 25 cent bins. Helped me learn to budget and save!
The $ stores don't have the lunch counters. I miss those.
They don't have the bulk candy counters either! I worked at a dime store in HS and college. We were allowed to eat pieces of candy from the counter, as long as we kept it reasonable. Anyone remember sea foam?

Here's a bit of trivia....at one time the lunch counter at Woolworth's was the largest chain restaurant in the US. Early 60's they had balloons with a price of $.01-.39 for a banana split. Unlike the dollar stores you could buy a goldfish or turtle at Woolworths.
I blame Woolworths for my stitching habit. A couple of times a month, Mom would go shopping at the big department stores, and when I went with her, we would end up at Woolworths. We’d split a piece of pie, a cup of coffee and a glass of milk, and afterwards we’d hit their sewing/crafting area for mom’s sewing notions.
There were racks of packaged linens, amazing designs. I’d look at the amazing things you could embroider, kit after kit...but I didn’t know how to embroider, and my mom sewed, but didn’t embroider either.
One year, a few months before Mother’s day, I conned my Dad into buying me a kit, everything was included. Hoop, needle, yarn and frame. A crewel work cockatoo on red linen. With a plastic French Provincial frame.
It had instructions! So I taught myself embroidery, and finished it in time. She kept it in her bedroom forever. And now I embroider, crochet, sew, and quilt.
I rarely went into them before I met her. I use them a lot now for cleaning supplies and other things where name brand and such is not really a concern. You do typically save some dough compared to even somewhere like Walmart.

Dollar stores just aren't fun like 5&10s....every item seemed to be quality not like cheapo dollar stores. They were FUN, with live turtles, birds, lunch counters, bins and racks of all sort of items kids would be interested in...
I also shopped there for presents...remember buying Pond's Cold Cream for mom.... and Brach's Chocolate Covered Cherries for Dad. My tastes became more appropriate as I aged...

My husband loves the dollar stores. I like It’s Awesome laundry pretreat. Really gets grease stains out of shirts.
And they sell Sourdough pretzel nuggets. Good work snack. I also like the box of caramel Nips.
Yay for caramel nips! They used to have coffee nips too, but I can't find them anymore.
