As many of you know, I've had vision issues since birth.

An older sister died at 5 days old - she was around the same weight I was (1 pound 9 ounces) at 26 weeks.

When I was born, I weighed the same and was in NICU for months. During that time, they gave me too much oxygen; it killed the nerves so I'm blind in 1 eye (always) and 20/60 (now with correction) - used to be 20/50 in the "good" eye which isn't so good.

One of the things I fear is a retinal detachment.

I have a retinal specialist I go to but lately, he has been way into the experimental stuff.

Has anyone had one of these and if so, what led up to it and what was the outcome? I know they can do wonderful things today. Time is my friend.

Losing my sight is the only thing I fear.

I had a retinal tear and the fear was it could detach. Fortunately, it was just a tear and I had surgery and everything is fine. The thing I learned, is if you start having vision problems like wavy lines or flashes, get to a doctor ASAP. If the retina detaches, you don't have much time before you can permanently lose vision in the eye. They need to do surgery quickly to save the vision.

You are not going to DX and RX yourself. If you do not like or trust your retinologist, find someone else.

I had a retinal detachment. I was at high risk because of the elongated shape of my eyeballs and the existence of lattice degeneration. I was told to watch for the warning signs, one of which was a sudden burst of floaters.

The retina had detached, and I had the typical "black curtain" coming down. I was at the hospital within hours for the reattachment surgery, and the outcome was good. I see about 20/60 in that eye now, which can be corrected completely (20/20) with glasses. I am delighted with the results, although I am always on the look-out (pun intended) for a repeat in that eye or a new occurrence in the other.

The post-recovery was difficult in that I had to keep my head down for 22 hours a day. (I could lift it to eat, limiting my upright position to 30 minutes at a time.) I was told this was crucial to a good outcome, and I followed the instructions exactly. But wow, my neck was killing me, and I had to keep this routine for 5 days.

All in all, I am very grateful that we have the surgical advancements that we do. Had this been 50 years ago, I would have been blind in that eye, for sure.

Just be very alert to the warning signs, and get thee to a retinal specialist at the first sign. If it happens in a weekend, do NOT wait until Monday. Irreversible vision loss begins at around the 24-hour point.

Please get a second (and third if necessary) opinion. You have every reason to be anxious about this. Another professional opinion should put your mind at ease. Best of luck.

I know what you are going through I have also been the early stages of a possible RD. I check it every six months and as above keep an eye for those sudden flashes and the curtain effects. I have a good friend who had it happen and he got it treat it asap and has good results.

My friend had it detached and reattached with no problem. At least he never told me there was a problem.

I do not plan to do this obviously.

Just looking for what others have experienced.

You do not have to be so nasty.

I don't see anything nasty about recommending you stop being your own doctor and find one you can trust. They are your eyes, not mine.

I had a retinal tear that srarted with the light flashes, but in addition to that I had a second symptom. The doctor said to watch for anything that looked like pepper falling down in front of your eye. That also happened and I had to have emergency laser surgery to fix the tear. I did not experience the curtain effect, but I was told to watch for it.
