I took a DNA test recently since I have no family left. I was hoping to find some family on both sides that could help me with my family tree. I got more than I bargained for.
I also wound up with a half sister I knew nothing about. It was quite an interesting month, as I worked with the "close contact" (as she was categorized on the website) to put the pieces together, and eventually confirm it through the one of our 4 parents still living.
I did one in April. Found an unknown half sister. She had been adopted as a baby and always knew who her mother was, but not her father. I'm glad I was able to fill in the blanks for her.
Lol four in my family have done the test. We all got different surprises. Actually just solved another mystery today.
Hubby & I did ours. I used to tell everyone that I was 1/2 Jewish. Turns out I was wrong. I am only 49.6% Jewish.
The first name that popped up, they said could be my nephew. I said, "I know that name." In fact, he is my sister's son.
My mother was adopted-I knew that. When she was in her 60s she was finally able to get the records opened and find out who her biological parents were. She was really into genealogy and was able to research her biological family. Even though she grew up as an only child, she discovered that she had sibs on both her mother's & father's sides. She has two brothers & a sister on her mother's side. Her brothers didn't know about her but her sister did. I am now close to one of her brother and just met my cousin (the other brother's kid) for the first time last year. But, this all happened BEFORE having the DNA done.
However, I never met anyone from her father's side but a few are on as my DNA family. A couple of them reached out to me. I had been meaning to reach out to them but just hadn't before they did. One cousin contacted me and asked if I was related to her family. I told her that her father was the brother of my grandfather (my mother's biological father) and I told her that we are in fact, cousins. She was not aware that her uncle (my grandfather) had another kid (my mother).
Yesterday, she was coming through town and it didn't work out but we talked on the phone for the very first time. We are hoping to get together some time this summer. So yeah, I think it is cool to meet with cousins who I have never met before.
Yes. Found out one of my brothers that I thought was a full brother is actually a half brother. That would have been news to my dad. What the heck, mom?
