My high school sweetheart was a sweetheart. A wonderful guy. Loved him with all my heart. The only thing was I knew deep down was I did NOT want to marry him, or anyone else.
It took meeting the right guy to change my mind. It was also then I learned the meaning of puppy love.
Oh, I should mention in our high school THE couple everyone envied did get married after high school...and divorced inside of 20 years.
I guess I don't understand why 20 years would be considered a failure...I mean you didn't say 5 years...or even 10 years. Seriously, unless you're a first time widow or widower you aren't a success?
I dumped my high school sweetheart for a girl seated next to me (a complete stranger) on a flight to Las Vegas. We were married two days later. Approaching our 25th anniversary in a few months.
I remember I called my high school sweetheart from my room at the Stardust and told her we have to break up since I just got married.

Less than 20 years, I don't remember exactly how long, and I didn't say it was a failure. Pretty much everyone thought it would last forever. They were super-serious.
Not only was she my high school sweetheart, but we we friends our entire lives. We met in day care at the ripe old age of 5 for me, 4 for her. Hung out together growing up, went on trips with each others families, just real good friends. Our 10th grade year of high school, her mom said we ought to be dating, so we did. Was a little awkward at first, but it felt right. Long story short, she got pregnant, we got married, she was killed by a drunk driver along with my son. We would have been married almost 32 years now.
My second wife, I was her high school sweetheart. (I wasnt in high school then) I met her the December after my first wife died.
