62 here, and I do it mostly standing, but I have medical issues with swollen legs and feet and sometimes choose to sit. It depends on how my balance feels and my pain level at the moment.
Somewhere in 60s, there is a sudden decline in the length of time you can balance on one foot. You go overnight, from virtually unlimited to a few arm-flailing seconds, and usually don't notice it. You don't need a pair of pants handy to test this.
Obviously you have to exercise those muscles in order to retain them. If you don't, they atrophy like any other muscle. I can stand at least 2 minutes on one foot - either one.
This is a funny question. I am able to put my pants on while standing, even though I broke my ankle in March. My balance is coming back okay. But, I use my bathroom as my dressing room. It's just a more convenient place for me to keep my pajamas and my shoes and jeans and t-shirt (I don't wash my clothes after one wearing, unless necessary). So, I often just put on my clothes while sitting on the toilet. I can reach my jeans and then put on my shoes, grab bra and tee-shirt.
Because I have a bad back (degenerative disc disease), hips (avascular necrosis)and bad knees (severe arthritis) and use a cane to get around, I have no choice but to sit to get dressed.
I go commando summers with shorts and regular winters with long pants over my boxerbriefs.
I also sit to don knee braces, socks and shoes also.
I have sat for dressing for years now.
Id definitely fall over trying to get dressed standing!
Age 75 and standing but I attend yoga classes 3-4 times per week and there are usually balance postures done in each class.
Another thing that I do, that someone suggested years ago to help with balance, is to stand on one foot while brushing my teeth. My Sonicare is timed for two minutes so that's one minute on each foot.
I am unable to do the sit/rise test from the floor with no hands.
