About 20 years ago right out in the middle of the Pamlico Sound I bumped into a girl I went to high school with. It was on a long ferry ride from Swan Quarter to Ocracoke on the Outer Banks of NC. I was standing on the back of the ferry looking at the swarm of seagulls and she walked up right beside me. I wish I had a photo of our faces at that moment We were kind of blown away.
Went on a camping trip thru my University (Illinois) to the Current River in Missouri. While floating down the river, a canoe passed us. One of my good friends from high school was on the passing canoe! She was in school at Creighton. We couldn't believe it! Haven't seen nor heard from her since. We had a ton of fun in high school.
The moral is, never feel safe in a strange city or country to do something you wouldn’t want to be caught doing; someone you know will see you!

I once met my boss's boss, from Wisconsin, in an airport in Florida (we were both starting family holiday vacations) on a day when we were both scheduled to be at work. Luckily, I had informal permission from my immediate boss for taking off. We briefly talked with each other but never mentioned it again.
Wendover, NV. I was at a casino on NYE. Crowded, full of people. I ran into a woman who used to live in my subdivision in Texas. I met her originally when she and my mom were in a traffic accident 20 some years earlier!
I have another. I was living in Chicago and I went to Boston on business. I stopped at an old restaurant in my old home town for lunch. Sitting at the bar was my brother who lived in Nashville. He was also in Boston on business and decided to have lunch at the old time place. We are friendly and chat on the phone but we had not seen each other for over a year.
Nothing too exciting for me. I bumped into a college friend at Chicago's airport as we were both waiting for connecting flights.
Another time, I bumped into a cousin at the African American History Museum in DC. He was visiting his girlfriend from out of town, so to see him where I did was a pleasant surprise, and gave me a buddy to go to the museum with.
A third (and recent) time, one of my friends from college and grad schools noticed my vehicle on road and called me out at a red light. I had just moved into the area (he knew I had moved, so that helped, but I hadn't seen him yet) and he noticed my car by my school logo as a license plate cover as well as by my out of state plates.
My wife and I went to the Cerromar Beach Hyatt in Puerto Rico in December 1991. We shortly thereafter bumped into my wife's first cousin and his wife. They were much better at the tables than we were.
A gay bar in Nashville, about a hundred miles from home, a very small town in Kentucky. I went to a Barry Manilow concert with a friend. We had just sat down in the bar after the concert when a young man rushed up to the table and said "I didn't know you were gay!" He was the brother of a high school classmate.
I'm not gay (not that there's anything wrong with that)

While I've never run into people that I know, I've had a couple of encounters with people from my area. I was visiting my sister in Boston when she lived there back in 1993 and she was taking me around to all the tourist spots. We were in a shop in Faneuil Hall when the cashier asked where I was visiting from. When I told him the suburbs outside of Philly, he proceeded to tell me that he had gone to school at Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, PA. Mind you, when I met him, he had dreads and a nose ring, so I'd say the military schooling didn't take.
Another time, my family and I were in Rome. We were attending a papal mass on a Wednesday (under Pope John Paul II) and they were introducing pilgrims who had come from various parishes around the world. When they mentioned one from Malvern, PA, we screamed, 'woo hoo,' at which point a gentleman came up to us and told us he lived in Malvern. (I don't, but I don't live too far from there.) We had an interesting conversation, thousands of miles away from home.
It happened to my mom, though, in San Francisco. She was in a restaurant and after she laughed, someone nearby said, '[her name]??' Apparently my mother's laugh is very distinctive. Lol. Turns out they were from our town.
