It was tough for me to decide which one is my most favorite for 1993 and 1994:
1993: Three colours: Red, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Piano, The Remains of The Day, Jurassic Park and Schindler's List
1994: Forrest Gump, The Lion King, Three colours: White, Three colors: Blue and Shawshank Redemption.
I chose Schindler's List and Shawshank Redemption simply because there were some scenes in them which etched deeper in my memory! It was very difficult for me not to select one of the Three Colours films of my favorite movie director, Krzysztof Kieślowski. I did choose his other films Dekalog: The Ten Commandments (1989) and The Double Life of Veronique (1991). I highly recommend watching all of his films.
I think that I would probably choose Schindler's List and Shawshank Redemption, too.
1958 - Hidden Fortress - a Samurai movie upon which George Lucas later based Star Wars. (Toshiro Mifune is a great actor, and Akira Kurosawa is one of the best directors ever.)
1959 - North by Northwest, tied with On the Beach. A special call out to Plan 9 from Outer Space (one of the worst movies in the history of motion pictures)
1960 - The Magnificent Seven (a westernization/remake of Akira Kurosawa's famous Seven Samurai which was a 1954 film)
1961 - Yojimbo (another Toshiro Mifune / Akira Kurosawa Samurai collaboration)
1962 - Mutiny on the Bounty
1963 - The Great Escape
1964 - Dr. Strangelove, A Fistful Of Dollars (directed by the great Sergio Leone; this movie is based on 1961's Yojimbo by Akira Kurosawa)
1965 - For A Few Dollars More, Beach Blanket Bingo
1966 - Grand Prix, Our Man Flint

1968 - Bullitt (for the classic chase scene)

I just now realized that although I placed an asterisk next to the movie Dave, I neglected to explain the reason for that asterisk. I felt obligated to pick Dave as my favorite movie from 1993 because I was an unpaid extra in it for a couple of days of filming, lol.
I was on a two-week business trip to L.A. and staying at the Biltmore Hotel downtown, and the movie was filming a scene there at the same time. The crew said that hotel guests were welcome to serve as extras in a specific crowd scene, so I took them up on their offer and did so over the weekend.
It was a lot of fun, although I did get chastised by the director (Ivan Reitman) at one point. We were asked to cheer as Kevin Kline walked down the aisle, and I let out a whoop, whoop, whoop, as was popularized by the crowd on the old Arsenio Hall Show. Mr. Reitman then yelled out that this wasn't the Arsenio Hall show and that we should just clap our hands and cheer normally, lol.

I just can't fathom how people could say Schindler's List is their favorite movie, ie., the one they enjoy watching over & over again, as opposed to feeling it might be, say, the "best movie" of that year. Once, or maybe twice, is enough viewings of that for me as much as I admire it. 3 hours of death camps, terror & nazis in B&W & knowing it is rooted in recent truth, not fiction... important, great but not enjoyable on a repeat basis.
Jurassic Park is the one I have watched again & again from that year for sheer enjoyment, hence it's my favorite.
OMG, how can nobody have listed Mary Poppins, the Sound of Music, the Music Man, Oklahoma, the Wizard of Oz, or so many other musicals yet, oh gosh like Guys and Dolls?
Gone with the Wind
So many Fred Astair movies. Can't think of them all or the years, but I was born in the mid 1950's and grew up with so many great musicals. They were my favorites growing up.
A more modern one I loved was Far and Away with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, too.
Don't know all the years.
