Lots of pups just waiting for a nice man to come along and take him home.
Might be the right time, Jim.
Oh I have a couple of those "new gals" NOTHING serious I'll never get serious again. There's two shelters within an hour of me, both have pit bill puppies, nothing else. No thanks.
It's funny how you can be with someone and still be totally empty inside.
Major snowstorm forecast for the next few days, I might get two feet of snow. WOO HOO!

Pit Bulls get a bad rap. If you raise them right and treat them right they are very sweet dogs.

Let it be. After a bad breakup, for a long time I couldn’t look men in the eye. I could, however, still enjoy being around some of them in a non-BG kind of context. That became a transition back to normal.
After the death of our dogs, I couldn’t even think about getting another one. Then I was able to think about it and found that no, I don’t want another one (unlike the human thing). I can enjoy meeting nice dogs but that’s it.
Whether human partner or pet, you’ll know when/if the emptiness is ready for more emotional risk.

Same thing at my local shelter. I was looking for a lap-dog toy breed and they seem to turnover daily. They have mostly large breeds, and yes, "tons" of pitts.
Went so often looking for a dog that one of the dog walkers and I became quite acquainted with each other. Finally, one day I asked him, "Do I have to come every day to find what I'm looking for? Do you have that big of a turnover?" He took down my information and mentioned that I should "go over there" and talk to Cindy, another of the dog walkers.
She has some type of deal whereby someone she knows makes a trip every few weeks with a truckload of dogs from Southern California, (up to North Idaho). Cindy knows ahead of time what dogs are coming and that is how I adopted my two.
Looking at the SoCal shelter web site, they have "tons" of small breed dogs available, as well as Labs and other non-Pitt dogs. (They have the pitts too).
It will be a minor hassle for you, but when you are finally emotionally ready, you might consider a trip to SoCal. There is a proposal in the state governor's budget for the next year to provide money to make all the shelters in CA no-kill shelters. There are already a lot of dogs available there. This will greatly increase the supply.

I have a close friend who has two pit bulls, sweet dogs. However, they are illegal in a lot of communities here, and my insurance specifically prohibits them. And I just don't like them.
In the metro Phoenix area, the shelters never keep little dogs more than a couple days. They are snapped up by the private rescues who "pull them" out of the big shelter immediately and then find new homes for them for a fee. I have looked endlessly for a small companion dog for my bijon-poo who lost his buddy 2 years ago. Those dogs are always gone from the shelter before I can get there.
Jim, I hear from several Husky and Malamute rescues. There are many of these dogs available. These breeds became popular due to a popular TV series. The northern breeds are high activity and need space, and most owners are not able to deal with them. So they are surrendered.
Major snow storm today I have almost a foot. YAY!!!!!!!!!!! Been out snow shoeing this morning. My cute purple hair bartender friend asked if she could come over tonight and make home made pizza in my new outdoor wood fired pizza oven thing. Sure.
I forgot to have taxes taken out for my first SS payment this month. I headed to the local SS office to take the appropriate IRS form in and change that. I had a book on my phone to read, but noticed the security guard on duty, he’s an authoritarian and brooks no disobedience.
A woman had sat down without checking in at the kiosk or asking the guard what to do and was quite disgruntled when she found out. As she was loudly grousing about it, he told her to quiet down and just check in. That made me sit up straighter! There were signs everywhere stating to check-in, turn phones to silent mode, and no smoking. He needed to remind several people to silence their phones and no e-cigs in side, they needed to be used outside. He’s earning his pension.
I had a wait, but the SS person couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful and taxes will be taken out for next month.
