Getting more expensive there all the time. Of course, the thing to do is go live there awhile and see if it suits you. I like to visit, but that's it. If I couldn't afford to live in the US, I guess that's one option.
I love the west coast of Costa Rica. Haven't seen any other areas. The only concern I would have is if you intend to do any sizeable amount of traveling around the country in retirement the road system is notoriously poor.
I use to work with a girl who's inlaws retired somewhere in the mountain area (not coastal) Costa Rica. They lived there about 8 yrs and REALLY loved it there, but once serious medical issues arose, the moved back to the US. Not really sure where they lived, but she said they NEVER considered moving back before that...really liked where they were.
Yes, the Global World will eventually come to just about every country in the world, and along with the lowering of the fertility rate in all of Latin America, what are cost advantages going to be down the road?
I did my scouting for potential retirement places all over Central/South America and the biggest surprises were trips to grocery stores, seeing that food is on a par with oil prices, I found it to be the same everywhere, except Argentina. Too often, I found the grocery prices in the U.S., heavily subsidized by the Government, to be cheaper.
And as far as real estate, with the big recent real estate crash, I really don't see the advantage there either.
Climate! That would do it for me! But after 22 years in the arid desert, accustomed to such low humidity levels, my body has been ruined, even humidity levels of 30%, today, send me into a painful discomfort zone!
And terrorists, which I refer to as insects! Don't even want to go in the vicinity of them! Spoiled again, no mosquito's, gnats, woodticks here in Las Vegas! And you can't tell me there's not mosquito's in Costa Rica!
Healthcare, now that would be another plus as I've been tasting Latin American Medical tourism all along!
A lot of misinformation in these posts. Costa Rica is expensive to live in when you want Food products like in the USA. Electricity is very expensive. Many rolling black outs. Import a new car and pay 50% import tax. If you are really wanting to move to Costa Rica then you need to read read read.
Rent for at least a year. Easier to buy a house than sell one.
