I was paid cash for babysitting jobs & had to use for toiletries, food or clothing/shoes or I wouldn't have them. I was emancipated at age 16 & supported myself with my first "real" job.
you expect me to remember something that happened 50 years ago?
You know what "they" say---it's easier to remember 50 years ago than a couple weeks ago, lol. That's our weird, aging memory storage. I have lots of vivid memories of my teenage years.
With my first paycheck? (And second, third, fourth, etc.) CLOTHES. Up until then, all the clothes I had were basically home sewn by my mother. Anything else I wanted, I had to sew it myself on a cursed and unwanted used sewing machine I was gifted (I was no seamstress and had no desire to learn). The stuff my mother made for me was always a size too big and fit baggy. I hated those homemade dresses/skirts. Think about a dozen shapeless dresses from the same pattern, but in different fabric/prints. I hated that fabric shop (blessedly out of business for 30 years). I hated those stupid Butterick and Simplicity patterns. Then, when I started earning my own money, I was able to buy my OWN clothes... form fitting jeans and tops and dresses. I never wore (or sewed) another stitch of homemade clothes or "Simplicity" pattern outfits ever again in my life, nor have I ever touched a sewing machine.
