Both Buffum’s and Bullock’s were chain department stores. Bullock’s was high end and Buffum’s catered to the more mature customer. When it came to back to school shopping, when I was younger I remember most of our shopping was at Zody’s and Penney’s. My mom also shopped at The Broadway when she wanted something better. I think my mom also bought some of my clothes at Miller’s Outpost. When I got old enough to start buying my own clothes, I used to like going to Robinson’s.
Interesting! I didn't know they were chain stores. I grew up in Orange County, so these stores were either in Orange or Tustin, maybe Santa Ana. All those towns flow together! And the outdoor malls back then:
Fashion Square, South Coast Plaza...I can't remember the others' names.
We didn't care about dressing alike when we were young. I guess we thought it was cute, mostly for photos but sometimes for relative get-togethers. There were 4 of us in descending order with the same dresses, lol. So funny to look at now.

Our parents bought our clothes at Montgomery Ward, now gone. Later I bought most of mine at Mervyn's, also now gone. Now I get my clothes mostly from Costco, and some from Amazon. I haven't set foot in a clothing or department store in about 10 years.
It was an hour's drive to the 'big mall' with very few clothing stores any closer. So we did a lot of shopping out of the Penney's and Spiegel mail order catalogs - back when Penneys was a good step above Sears and Spiegel somewhere above that.
Dress clothes Robert Hall my Aunt worked there, 20% discount. Other duds, Sears my Mom worked for Allstate which was a Sears company, 20% discount. For some reason JC Penny for briefs as my Mom thought the gold band made them look “rich”. By the way in my late teens when girls would see them no one commented.
My mom made most of my clothing. And when I was in my teens I sewed my own, and made some stellar tennis dresses and jackets from Crissie Everett patterns.
Occasionally we would go to Sear's and buy undies, shoes, etc.
I can't even imagine having to dress like a sister. How did it go for you two?
I remember Buffum's in Pomona (it's now a medical school). My mom sent me to sewing school in a building next door to Buffum's when it was still open. I learned to sew. Was so annoyed with that lady because she was a stickler, but boy did I learn to sew. My first purchase out of high school was to buy a Singer sewing machine at Sears on credit for $120 LOL. (I was making $1.25/hr at the time )
Bullock's was in L.A. out on Wilshire, right? Was there one in Orange County? Pasadena?
The Bullock’s I remember was at South Coast Plaza, and Buffum’s was in Santa Ana. Until just now, I’d forgotten that’s where I got my ears pierced.
Robert Hall, Goldblatt's, Sears, & Two Sisters. None of which are around here anymore.
