One told me - well she has to keep going

I said and shopping at Target and WalMart for things you don't need means that you are keeping on?

Why not do something to help others?
I’m not sure why she shouldn’t shop at Target or Walmart just because she is old and has cancer? Why is she supposed to help others? When I was going through cancer treatment it was exhausting , I mean bone weary (getting enough sleep wasnt going to solve it) and being able to do something normal , like thrifting or shopping, was balm and escape from the daily grind of being a full time patient.

When someone has cancer or is just old, their energy levels vary. On a good day, you do stuff, on a bad day, you stay home.

Most volunteering opportunities involve a schedule (like Thursdays from 2-4). If you're feeling fine, that's ok, but it's hard to predict. Most are probably closed on Black Friday anyway.

But you can shop almost any day, for as long as you like. You get a little exercise, see people and new stuff. It's good activity.

I'm kinda getting the whole "how are you living your retirement?" thing, with the whole "you're doing it wrong" vibe.

No a fan.

Thankfully the OP is not one of my family members. I cannot imagine berating some old frail family members who are struggling to keep at least minimally active. I certainly would not criticize them or tell them they should be doing something else.

And then to put it on the web presumably looking for some agreement with this behavior. Some people are just beyond belief and it is not the old folks going to Target that I am referring to.

I did not say anything to them - no berating at all

Just wondered how this is something to do to pass the time

And I know you don't do that -

When my mom turned 80, she got her ears pierced for the first time as a birthday present from me. Her earlobes had always been too small for clasp earrings. Earrings/ear studs became her new passion, and by the time she passed at 93 she had a collection of about 30 beautiful pairs of earrings. Every day she'd select a different pair to wear, matching her clothes, even on days where she wasn't leaving the house. That's zest for life, as far as I'm concerned. Yay, Mom!

(And for those who think she should have "helped other people," she consistently donated to 3-4 charities, and was a registered blood donor.)
