I bought a half acre lot and did not build on it. Still own it but the value dropped 75% when the developers walked away. It will eventually come back up but after I’m gone.

It's uncanny, how a person can earn $2,000,000 in a lifetime, and spend $1,999,998, leaving only a few coins in a sock drawer.

Technically, every American is born a millionaire. $12 an hour as a WalMart greeter, over 45 years, is a million. If you can't earn that, public benefits will bring you up to the 7 figures that a minimum lifestyle costs.

Personally, I've wasted very little. I think, in my lifetime, I've had only about 25 years gainfully employed the whole year, and most of those at low-demand jobs I could perform effortlessly. I've bought three cars new. I've rarely bought clothes, furniture or appliances anywhere except thrift shops. I travel a lot, on a per-diem of about $30 on the ground. You can save hundreds on plane fares by sleeping overnight at Moscow airport while connecting.

How much I wasted? When I was a kid, I wasted 14c going to a movie I didn't like, but that was half my allowance. It cost me $1,000 to spend 7 months in Europe-on-$5-a-day, but worth every penny.

I cannot relate to this and have no or few check marks on the initial list.

Decades ago I drank beer and smoked so those vices cost me thousands. Otherwise I have always been careful in spending money. A lifetime of being frugal has meant we now have a comfortable retirement. I do not spend money on showoff items such as fancy cars or clothing. Most of my purchases are quite utilitarian. The exceptions are money spend on hobbies: painting, photography and archery. RV travel is relatively cheap but I do have an expensive heavy duty pickup to pull my camper and have not used it since before Covid.

This reminded me of a joke I heard on TV once, concerning George Best, the extremely good looking Manchester United and Northern Ireland prolific goal scoring soccer genius of the seventies.
He was famous for having nailed many gorgeous women, including a couple of Miss World winners.
The joke was that a room service waiter took a couple of bottles of champagne to George’s suite in a 5 star hotel, and when he carried the champagne in, George was laying on a bed which was covered with thousands of £10 and £20 notes, buck naked, with a naked Miss World straddling his hips.
“Oh George”, said the waiter, “where did it all go wrong?”

80s for me. Money spent on coke and at the bar on Friday nights. It was fun at the time, but damn.

Oh, and cigarettes.

Yes, married a financially irresponsible man, too. Of course, see above post, which led to this lol. Gambler, alike, etc. Got addicted to everything but working regularly. Cracked up cars, wracked up tickets.

Took me years to recover financially from him.
