When I see someone ringing a bell I smile. They can be a motley, good-hearted crew.
The smile is in remembering a story my father told me shortly before he died. He rarely talked about his war experiences until then but he spent at least three Christmases in the Army Air Corps during WWII.
He was in the South Pacific and they had been in the war zone and came in tired and hungry and headed for the Red Cross tent where sandwiches were being made. They were told to keep their mitts off the food, that it was for the POWs.
Dad said the Salvation Army would come out into the war zone and pass sandwiches and coffee out to the men. He said, if you ever want to donate to a good cause, give it to them.
I don't know if things have changed but I do know that the Sal still has success in helping people pull themselves out of the quagmire of addiction, joblessness and hopelessness to this day, whatever their crazy politics is. I think we need that help.
For every one of us askew let's hope there is always a matching helper out there.
Went to cut down a tree with a friend, something I have never done before in my life. Hard to find a good one, you are only allowed to cut down the ones with a tag on them. Some gorgeous ones with no tag, some scraggly ones with a tag. We finally found one she liked.
Baking cookies, went all out. Still have a ball of dough in the fridge to make more for me!!
Getting cookies from the grandkids, lovingly decorated! the littlest one is 4 and old enough to help out, and it shows!

Sounds like a five-star holiday to me One day in my late 40s, I cut down so many nuisance trees with my chain-saw, I stopped checking how tall they were. I learned better in the nick of time. But never cut down a Christmas tree. That would have been fun!

Yes, yes; definitely yes. My intrepid little granny I mentioned in my original post got her kettle stuffed with good old cash money. I called the media outlets asking for them to do a story on her.
At present, God has no hands but our own. Don’t know what theater your Dad was in, but a sermon I once heard involved soldiers afraid of otherwise very peaceful and generous Pacific Rim folk who, for reasons at first unknown, had crucifixes with the savior’s hands uniformly cut off. The explanation was that the savior at present has no hands but ours.
My 85 year old father told a completely incomprehensible joke at the dinner table where 15 family members were gathered. Dead silence for 3 seconds, then everyone laughed loudly, even the youngest 11 yr old member (although he did look confused).
Just watched "A Christmas Carol" (originally "Scrooge") with Alastair Sim. I have watched that every single year for probably the past 50 years, and it never fails to bring a smile.
