The day after Christmas and I was thinking of going shopping, at least for turkey. But, between things such as having to be in town tomorrow and things to be done here, I decided to hold off till tomorrow, because, after all, I have to be in town tomorrow.

Is that way it will run in retirement, deciding not to do things until one absolutely has to be there?

For me, yes, but I know other retired folk who just love to go anywhere at the drop of a hat and they take little trips to stores and whatnot all the time, even just to look at things. I need a real reason to bestir myself to go into town, like I have an appointment or my library books are due or I need to pick up a grocery order, and when I do, I bundle as many errands as I can into the trip. I'd just rather be at home.

I live between two different commercial areas, so I divide my errands to do some stuff at one place and other stuff at the other place on different days -- whatever is appropriate. "Town" for me is 15 miles away so it takes something like a specialist appointment or a major event for me to trek that far. That is a 45-minute drive one way. Most of what I need is a lot closer. I do get cabin fever at times and just go for the sake of getting out of the house.

Yes I had a sibling that would love to go to the Dollar stores or Wal-Mart just to look around. Kind of her entertainment.

I've only been leaving the house once a week now. When I get the energy. Usually on Sunday.

That's how life always is. You prioritize tasks and obligations, and act accordingly.

Retirement is no different from how I lived before retirement.

I live right in town so everything is close by. I tend to bundle my errands and like to have days I don’t go out except to walk the dogs. Sometimes I don’t do that and stay in my pjs.

This. So many seem to think "retirement" is equivalent to suddenly being dropped into some 4th dimension. It isn't. Everyday stuff still needs to get done just as it did before. The main difference I've noticed is having more control over when. It wasn't rocket science before and it still isn't.

If I have to be in town, which is 12 miles away, I schedule my errands to do around appointments. I also avoid going on errands around lunch time, or after school, when stores are busier. Never drive at night unless absolutely necessary.

That is how my husband does it Why do it today if it can be done tomorrow is his mantra. He has managed quite well so far.
I cannot stand to let things be undone. I am also involved in more activities than he is and so I do go out at least once 3 or 4 times a week. This week everything is dead and will gear up come Jan.

Sometimes that turns out OK.

Other times, you end up with a house of cards that collapses.
