Do you have an AARP membership? Would you recommend getting one and, if so, what do you use yours for? If you have declined to get a membership, what were your reasons for doing so?

Right, that has been discussed recently. I got a 5-year membership on my 50th birthday, and lifetime membership at 55 (it was not possible to get that at 50). I got it in order to stay informed about retirement-related matters cheaply (I think lifetime membership cost $200, for all retirement-related info in one place). I find it useful.
The only complaints I have heard voiced about AARP are that it's too far to the left politically, and that it sends too much advertising junk mail. I don't find them to be politically strongly partisan (although they obviously do advocate for special interests of the retirees, which can coincide with agenda of a political party, more often D than R), and I don't get any mail from them except for their two monthly publications, which I find informative.
It has been discussed endlessly. The membership is cheap & the magazine could be worth it, for a while anyway, for its focus on seniors' issues, some that might be interesting to you. There are also discounts to various things like hotels, etc., but I never used them.
They're just a front for selling The Hartford insurance. They screwed over a lot of seniors in the past from so-called legislation to help certain seniors which never materialize but they sure soaked a lot of seniors for the monthly dues.
We had it for a couple years, and got our Medigap insurance through them. We're very happy with the insurance, but have since let our AARP membership lapse. I found the magazine of occasional interest but never used the discounts. I think I will re-join though. I would like to support the advocacy work they do.

What "monthly dues"?
