I thought I'd share this as it's good to hear about people in retirement who successfully make life changes. This woman from Texas bought a house in southern Italy for $123,000 on 2.5 acres and is very happy with her new life. She was divorced, her mother had died and after crunching numbers, found her part of Italy more affordable than Texas where she was living.

She says her money goes a lot farther, she's more active and loves it there despite some challenges.

I'm happy for her and it is a case of whatever works for someone.

Me, as a Steward, I may be no fan of the Texas State House...............but someone has to stay here to take care of the animals.

That is, we all have different motivations to why we are this place and not that......and it is not always the bottom dollar......or lira (now euro).

Good for her, and for everyone who does what makes them happy... especially in retirement.

I too am glad she's happy.

I don't envy her but I admire her following her dream.

Her location is rural which is why it’s cheaper. In Europe most people don’t have central AC or any at all or dryers because electricity is so expensive. Hard to develop deep friendships if you aren’t fluent in Italian.

I love visiting Italy but want to live by my kids and close friends.

I could move to a cheaper part of the country but some things are more important than money to me.

Important to have an expat community to relate to, IMO. I couldn't live without a/c, though.

But good for her. It's an adventure, especially as seniors.

CNN has a lot of these kind of stories. Interesting.

Of course, everyone has different circumstances. She seems to have found her niche, partly because she was in-between things in life, like going through a divorce, no longer employed, looking for an affordable change. She does state she will spend holidays back in Texas with family but there is no mention of children, just a niece. In the mean time, she's enjoying her retired life with easy access to large cities like Rome and Venice via train excursions.

Many Americans move to EU - Italy or Spain, and lately to Balkan countries. They seems to be very happy with the quality of life.
