Check out Hillsborough NC...adorable town, easy access to the culture of Chapel Hill (liberal! university town!) and Raleigh and Durham. A couple of hours drive time will put you in the mountains for their rich cultural hertiage and beauty.

Winters are colder than San Diego but nothing like the northeast. Maybe a couple of littly bitty snows, some freezing days but nothing you can't handle.

^^^^^^^^ Little Dolphin, are you aware that you just revived a thread in which the last post was almost seven and a half years ago? There is certainly nothing wrong with that per se, but we should be aware that the OP has probably made a decision and acted on it in the space of seven and a half years!

In fact, the OP last posted on City-Data in this very thread about seven and a half years ago. Again, it's certainly O.K. for posters to continue this conversation without the OP, as some other wealthy, liberal, "intellectual" people may be looking for a location based on similar criteria. I'm sure there are plenty of like-minded snobs out there.

It's an easy oversight/mistake to make. No need to feel like a dullard and buffoon!

I agree - Hillsborough is a nice spot!

And yes - maybe some other folks who have lots of $$$ and are very progressive would be interested in this thread, lol.

What we should be doing is suggesting places with a high homeless population and where a couple with lots of money and progressive ideals could go and give away millions of their largesse, since doubtless they would want to share their bounty with those less fortunate.

The last time I visited Galveston, TX, I was told that it was a very popular destination for homeless, b/c of the weather. So maybe one of the upscale beach communities there could profit from having these charitable, community activist folks in their neighborhood.

La Jolla if money is no object.

Santa Fe is not only cold in winter (we visited one Thanksgiving) - but you have to like DIRT.

There's not much greenery there.
