If people don't like me posting links to these articles, please tell me. I usually share non-financial retirement articles like this lifestyle one about traveling with Elderhostel (caters to over 55 year old travelers that like learning along with their travel) that is on the MercuryNews.com website. From the news article, there is a link to the Elderhostel website.
I did some homework on Elderhostel recently. Found they had wonderful activities, and have heard great things about them--BUT they surely aren't cheap. A little too rich for my blood, and feel I could do alot of the activities cheaper probably--BUT they do have some great, wonderful activities. Just my opinion.
**Personally, I like links to articles, so keep them coming, please.

One thing I did was go to their map and look at some of the trips/lectures in surrounding states (to my state) that I could drive to. You know, I wouldn't want to walk/hike around the South in the summer (June - September) but I wouldn't mind driving to the part of their trip that's a birding cruise (without the hike) but do it in March or April, instead. It's giving me some ideas for things to do on my own.
I actually thought $100 per day for hotel, meals and activity (inside US) was pretty reasonable.

Elder hostel prices scared me away too.
I used another 'guesthome' (evergreenclub) this weekend ($20) and learned much about how this couple has traveled economically since 1993. They really have enjoyed home exchanges with teachers, as they get a month or two to enjoy and learn about the place, and are often greeted with itineraries of local trips. They have done places all over the world + in USA this way, as well as the guest home process.
Finding locations with adult learning opportunities should be possible, or doing some short term volunteer work with a National Park or forest service, or aid program. I'm actually considering Peace Corp or similar.
I usually travel for $50 / day via 50 mpg car or 20 mpg motorhome.
Cruises are cheap at the moment, a family member is currently on a Mexico riviera 7 day cruise for $274. During 9/11 travel crunch, she did the Mediterranean for $30 / day.
Limited opportunity, so I will stimulate the economy by traveling, and get a job 'later'. (hopefully wages and availability will be better)
