I am baffled as to finding a place that is very sunny and not too conservative.

I don't like humidity and don't think I would tolerate the risk of earthquakes well when really old.

Some parts of California would seem perfect, however, just can't deal with the big one that will surely come in my lifetime

Consider Sacramento or Placerville, Auburn, Grass Valley, Nevada City, Murphys or almost anywhere in Gold Country. Even during the La Prieta earthquake there was only a bit of a roll in Sacramento. It was nothing startling.

When the big one comes and San Francisco slides into the Pacific Ocean, you m ght end up with waterfront property!

I second Santa Fe. Lovely place but not cheap.
Similar climate but smaller and maybe cheaper would be Flagstaff, St. George, Utah.

New Mexico is a good idea I simply can't stand cloudy days. They are so depressing to me. I need to check the number of sunny days in Santa Fe vs Abq.

Albuquerque is sunnier and about 2000 feet lower. Warmer too.

Maybe the west coast of Chile - one of the driest places on earth

Thank you Tesaje. I have only been to Albuquerque once and it was for a single night. I don't have a good feel for the city so I may have to do some investigative work to find out more.

As for Chile, I bet the west coast is beautiful but I better stay in the US
