That 2 percent is a joke. As a federal employee I pay state,and federal taxes and I also have a SIZEABLE chunk deducted to ssi which as a 30 something, I will never see some of that money returned to me. Oh yeah the cost of insurance went up about 8 percent so where is this so called raise again?
Other than the IRS how many other agencies bring money in? The purpose of government is to provide services and that means a cost to tax payers for services provided. Are you saying you think you should be taxed without their being service to the public in exchange?

Hear! Hear! As a manager for my state there were take-backs, furloughs and no COLAs for almost seven years while rank-and-file did receive some increases. While many complained bitterly, I was happy to be well employed and earning enough for our needs, plus some.
What really irked me was when healthcare costs rose and people acted like it was the end of the earth. At least we had coverage and good coverage at that.
Same with taxes. Better to pay towards them, within reason, than be unemployed and not earning anything to be taxed.

Thanks, you understand. Others here seem to be all about 'me' and defend themselves. They have worth and no other employees non government do.
I am very appreciative that I have a job period. Make no mistake about it. I thank the lord daily on my drive to work. However the op came off like we are "getting over". I think retirees and the disabled should get an increase also.

That is absurd. There was only a clarification of the attack on the civil service. No one was saying non governmental workers do not have worth. Maybe the fat cats at the top who get paid their millions, but not the workers. & the "embarrassment" fm our managers? get real. You 2 are happy to take the higher salaries and are not adding your pay raises to the deficit are you? Do you give it back? That is an option you know.
No, you think you are paid what you are worth. Until you decide to be contractors to the govt and find out what they get paid for less work and responsibility. Then you think you were underpaid. The fact that there is a high unemployment rate is bad but the bit of stability the govt workers get at a relatively low pay rate has little to do with it.
It gets really tiresome to continually hear the false attacks on the civil service. Just as it is absurd to blame unions for all the problems when they make no management decisions about what will be made or sold. It is just blaming the victim.
It wasn't the civil service who made all those liar loans and ponzi schemes that started this economic collapse last year. When the economy is good, the feds get paid a lot less. When inflation skyrocketed, the feds got an average of 2 1/2 percent less. For several years running. To complain about this small raise is just sour grapes. Lots of the civil service also put their lives at risk to serve the public. The govt has been throwing trillions at the private sector to try to keep the economic collapse from getting worse and it is gradually a little better. But those who actually caused this problem are given a free pass while we blame those who had no say in any of it.
The idea that people who work for the govt should not get paid or should get starvation wages is absurd. The govt needs the best and the brightest but the only real draw to hire them is to appeal to a feeling that they can do some good in the world and have some stability in employment.

But governmant workers are not the best and brightest ;never have been. In fact it widely held that firing a federal governamnt employeee is dang near impossible.
