Hi,

We are a family of 4 with two small kids and planning to move to East Providene from East side of Providence. We found an apt near Taunton Ave which is very close to I-195 and Henderson bridge. Does anybody know if this area is safe for a family with small kids to walk around? We are a little nervous as we are a kind of minority in USA and might be eye-catching for some people.

I will appreciate any comments on this area.

For the most part it is safe to walk around. Much of the area is single family with the owner residing in it. I would check with the East Prov Police if you have real concerns.

Thank you for the input.
I heard that most of the parts are safe and Rumford and Riverside are the best part in East Providence. But I couldn't find which parts are not so good. I just want to prevent possible danger especially for kids.

There is no danger- it's just very working class and not at all "upscale".

just in case you are Asian, there is an Asian community in Cranston where the rents are similar to East Providence, might be worth a look.

Thanks for additional info.
I contacted east providence police. According to their info, being minority should not be an issue there, whick sounds good. I will check by myself again before deciding to move there.

Again, thanks for all the inputs.

Where along Taunton Ave. is the place? I grew up on N. County Street (off of Waterman - one major street up from Taunton Ave.). Overall, I have always felt safe walking around the area. I used to walk to Shaw's, Burger King, and Six Corners all the time as a kid and still do when I visit my folks (young adult now).

The one area of the city that is "rougher" is past Six Corners out toward the "downtown" area of East Providence (Walnut St., James St., etc.). I wouldn't call it "dangerous" by any means, but there are a few more "characters" that tend to roam around and there is an uptick in minor crimes (car break-ins).

Hi wxjay,

Thank you for the info. Actually it is summit st, which seems in the "rougher" area you are talking...

^As I said, I would not call the area "dangerous" at all. So, don't be too concerned about it.
