Thanks for responding to my question, that's what I thought...your going to make a great Rhode Islander!
Who says people are not moving to RI. We just keep taking the best other states have to offer up.

Vaccinated and licensed with the city for a small fee each year. The city keeps records and can fine you for not registering your dog (typically only done if your dog were to run off and be found be the city. As far as I know they don't go around looking for unlicensed dogs.) Pit bull owners are required to carry liability insurance on the dog in case the dog injures someones. Not saying pit bull are dangerous, just informing you of the law. Animal Control | Licensing | City of Providence - (401) 421-7740

Pawtucket has a complete ban on pit bulls, but I don't know too much about it.

Beth98, that was some very useful information, and just the kind of thing I'll reference when I go and get a pooch. Thank you.

And people seem a whole lot crazier. Like, when you hear on the news some really awful story where a bunch of 10 year olds lit another kid on fire - Florida. And there are few industries besides tourism. There is an aerospace presence on the east coast, but with the axing of the shuttle program, that's going to take a hit. And the prevailing housing style is: big, ugly, and poorly made.

Wanna soda or beer or sandwich or toothpaste or ......? Get ready to drive. Nothing is in walking distance. And if it were, you'll still need a shower after you get home since it's so humid your clothes are soaked with sweat in about five minutes. Like bugs? Move to the sunshine state.

Then there are the transplanted elderly retirees - the largest population group. Many are truly rude, drive dangerously, and seem in no hurry to do anything, never mind if you're trying to run an errand on your lunch break. Oh, but they find the time to elect an asshat like Rick Scott as the gov.

On the positive, some of the beaches are great. New Smyrna Beach is just awesome. I used to go every day after work. If you like fishing, Florida's real good for that, too.
The user eloquently states here just a few of the reasons I left Florida. I think, given the fact we have the same aversions, you're going to love Rhode Island. Don';t forget we don't have people pull guns on your here for passing them on the freeway! (A month;y occurrence in FL.)

I know it's nuts...some people don't think kids should be setting each other on fire! Damn socialist commie Nazis!

Ha ha! Yeah I forgot about the gun thing. Every nutbucket and their brother has them. I was once told in a gun shop that getting a firearm in FL was "easier than buying a t-shirt".... it is. Throw in an extra $50 and they'll give you a concealed permit. The medical privacy laws also ensure that the truly crazy (certifiable) can get guns too. Then ya start thinking you need one just keep yourself safe from everyone else with a piece. Sadly, shootings are a daily occurrence in nearly any florida town.

When a person goes into a courthouse in RI, are there full time sheriffs and metal detectors present?

Yes...lol. Only, I don't believe they would go by the term "sheriff." :-D

Interesting how Vermont has very liberal firearm laws, such as no permit to carry a firearm, no wait time, and has one of the lowest rates of firearm deaths (per 100,000 citizens) in the Country.

I wish I could attribute the lower rate of death to the liberal laws there...but I just can't. My guess is that the lower rate of firearm death is more attributable to the type of folks that live in VT, by and large.

If you had liberal firearm laws in, let's just call them "less civilized" societies...the rate of firearm deaths would probably not drop.

I'm going to have to go w/ sweetpea on this one. The situations that a person might deem "gun worthy" are more lax up here. Traffic? Whatever. The light's gonna be be green in another 60 seconds. Doesn't seem as personal. Also, random interactions in the NE don't seem as personal - it's like it's more about keeping up the flow of daily life. Maybe that's how it is in VT?!

South Florida is it's own animal. Stay safe and NEVER underestimate the locals. Your intuition is invaluable there. Drugs, violence, and property crime are part of life down there. I don't get that same vibe up here. And yes, wherever there are lots of people, there are going to be bad neighborhoods. Regardless, it still seems safer up here.

...So what your saying is Florida is a less civilized society than say... Vermont.
That would suggest, Gun's don't kill...People kill. Since society is based on...people.

Now what is really interesting is District of Columbia has the highest rate of murders per 100,000 citizens, and DC has laws that are extremely stringent against the ownership of firearms.
What do Florida and DC have in common?

If just Florida is a state where "children light other children on fire" Then what is Rhode Island, where
a "citizen cannibal" murdered and ate a child... and without a firearm.
