I'm moving to Providence in about a month for a job and I know almost nothing about the area. Any suggestions for specific neighborhoods to look for an apartment? I'm a single guy, mid-30's. My housing requirements are that it allows a 40 lb dog, is in a walkable neighborhood, and is close enough to downtown that the commute is minimal. I don't need a huge, newly renovated apartment. Location and pet friendliness are of main importance.

Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

The east Side or downtown. Check previous threads for many discussions of these areas.

fltmchz1, honestly it will be near impossible for you to find
an apartment to rent within daily commute to Providence that
allows dogs, especially a good-sized 40lb one. However, if you
think you will stay for at least 6 months or longer, there is another
alternative, and it's buying or taking out a loan for one of the
inexpensive trailers which are indeed a short commute to Providence.
Here is a link for you. These range 10-20k, your dog will have a safe
place to stay, you can re-sell the home when you leave the area.

Warwick Real Estate & Warwick Homes For Sale — Trulia.com

other than that, all you can do is talk to landlords and try to convince them
to change their minds, I suggest Craigslist.. but the above alternative is
superior in many ways.

I know the park on Route 2/Tollgate very well, and it's right off the highway,
only 15-20 minutes until you park your car in Providence off 95. Coventry
would take longer, close to 30 minutes.

You cannot get a loan on a trailer. But he might be able to rent one.

Don't know where you got the idea about not being able to rent with a pet. Check Craigslist for east side and pets- there are many.

they are not rented, they are sold, and you can indeed get a
loan, they are classified as homes. If he can't get a mortgage,
he can still get a personal loan or line of credit.

I have been driving around the East Side area and really like it. There are many neat areas north and south of Rochambeau St. and both on the east and west side of Hope St. I see many people walking there big dogs and not all own homes I am sure.
