what is a reassessment for a town?

I was sort of afraid that Barrington would be the only suitable option, as you say. Unfortunately, I think it would mean a significant hit for me, income tax wise, so I gotta make sure it's worth it. I don't know what the other taxes are like in RI, property etc, and I don't know the insurance situation. I would also likely be looking to buy - and in about 2 yrs from now. Starting early...

I would give Bristol and even Warren a second look. Think there was even a thread here recently on the schools, and had some positives in there. I don't what your salary is? From what I've heard for most earners, the income tax difference between MA and RI isn't huge.

Default RI taxes

Income tax and property tax are two different things. Property owners pay real estate property taxes (landlords pass this on through the rent). Motor vehicle owners pay motor vehicle taxes.

If you go to this website and look up various homes in various locations in RI, the propert tax will be given. This is the Rhode Island MLS website.

www.riliving.com

Also on that website is a chart of all the property taxes and motor vehicle taxes in Rhode Island listed by city and town.

All you have to do is take the percentage of assessed value of a property and multiply it by the rate. Voila !
