What are some nice towns near Newport that we could stay in and drive to Newport? The hotels are expensive in the fall.

Anything near Newport is expensive year round. You might try places to stay in Bristol, Portsmouth, Middletown and parts of Tiverton that are easy access to Newport. Many chain hotels and B&B in those areas.

Try the Seekonk, Swansea area of Massachusetts. It is about a 30 minute drive to Newport, but hotel rates are more reasonable. You can get to Newport either on I-195 to Route 24 or take a slower ride thru Barrington, Bristol along Route 114.

There is a new Town Suites I think in North Kingstown about 20 min to Npt, and a very pleasant drive through Wickford Village and Jamestown on the way.

this also includes a fare of $4 across the Newport bridge each way. You will avoid this toll by staying in the East Bay area. West Bay hotels/motels use to be able to hand out tokens to out of towners going to Newport.

I believe there are a few moderately priced hotels in Portsmouth...a HI Express and a Marriott come to mind.

I so miss Rhode Island in the fall--the area is like no other and one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I have ever been....
