I work in the greater New Bedford area, but am bored with the rural lifestyle here. I'd like to move closer to civilization. I love Providence, but i have a young child, and schools are going to be a consideration. Plus, I'd prefer living in Massachusetts, b/c I'd be taking a hit on the higher taxes if I lived in RI, although, I would live in RI if I found a place i loved.
Any nice towns to recommend?
I also would like a town that has its own little life, like Barrington or Bristol. I looked at Swansea, Rehoboth and Seekonk but they all seem to be centered around big box stores and highways. Is this accurate?

There are no "big box" stores in Bristol that I know of. I think you are talking about the area of "crossroads" of Rt. 6, where East Providence RI/Seekonk MA/Barrington RI converge. Bristol RI could be your cup of tea. Not as expensive as Barrington, not as much of an "enclave" type of town. Lots to do in and near Bristol.
Also, you could investigate the towns closer to New Bedford such as Dartmouth, South Dartmouth, Westport possibly. ??

I actually loved Bristol whe I visited, buy wasn't sure about their schools etc. I actually think I could afford Barrington, though. That said, I was hoping there would be something similar on the MA side... But I guess can't have it all...

all very cute summer towns, but not much as far as "life." I want a little downtown with a street and shops and restaurants, a place to have coffee, a playground for the kids... Doesn't have to be huge, but a couple of blocks so you could do a nice stroll on a Sunday... I want exactly what Bristol has, you hit it on the nose, but none of the towns around here have it, or at least, I haven't found it.
I work in North Dartmouth, and sometimes in New Bedford itself, and would commute 30-45 min.
Then I think Barrington/ Bristol is the only suitable place for you. You could also look into Warren between those two (more affordable and has some of the feel you are looking for), but unfortunately there is nothing that close in MA that fits the bill. Mansfield and North Attleborough have some of your desired characteristics, but they are probably pushing your 45 min. limit from NB.

Be sure to do your homework on all the RI taxes before you decide on Barrington or Bristol. Property, motor vehicle, (and your auto insurance costs -- it will make a difference because of your mileage to work in NB).
Barrington just completed a re-assessment. If you are going to rent, it will be reflected in rents as a landlord expense as well. Apartments in Barrington are few and far between. Bristol, much easier to find an apartment.
