Hi all,

I'll be coming to Providence next Friday in the midday - around lunch. How long might it take to make the trip by car with traffic from Melrose (just north of Boston)?

It's for an interview, so a high estimate would be great. Thanks!

90 min if you happen to hit a couple traffic snags. Depends on how low you'll be flying if you can shave off some minutes. Usually you should make it fine in an hour and fifteen minutes or so. Watch for the sudden speed limit after you get into Pawtucket, there's usually a state trooper sitting pretty waiting to pick up speedsters.

Good luck on the interview.

What are you talking about? Unless it is bumper to bumper it shouldn't be any more than an hour and probably more like 45 minutes. Take 1.5 hrs if you want to end up with 45 minutes before the interview to go find a place to get a cup of coffee.

It takes an hour and a half or less from Newport to Boston in normal traffic without overly speeding. So it should take half that time between Boston and Providence.

Of course some unforseen thing could happen and then it could take hours. Myabe they will start putting up TSA checkpoints between Boston and Providence. Wouldn't THAT be nice and certainly extremely helpful (NOT) in aiding commuters between RI and MA to getting to their destinations on time.

Melrose to Providence is 1:10 with no traffic. I actually drove this just yesterday. 90 minutes sounds right to me to allow for extra time if there is a traffic back up somewhere and to park in Providence if you need to find parking.

For the record Providence to Melrose took 90 minutes with traffic, so that's not unrealistic, but midday tends to be pretty clear.

Good luck with the interview!

How about you read the original post before you run your mouth? OP is in Melrose, not in Boston. There is no way to make it from Melrose to Providence in 45 minutes during noon-time, even on a good day unless there is heavy speeding involved. It'll be a good hour. OP asked for a high estimate, so I added 20 minutes. Makes 1.5 hours in my book. And good job on the TSA checkpoints. That was almost funny. You're getting there.

Wolfwax ; germanspy and beth have given you excelent advice 90 min /1.5 hr, (93 south to 95 south into pawtucket and then providence RI )
If you get there in good weather , you may be 15 min earley, do you care? then you will know the way.

If it is raining or snowing add 15 min.

That other poster must have a led foot holding all the way at 80 to 85 mph to achive 60 min, either that or they are wraping there cigaretties a bit to tight.

Thank you GermanSpy. I know there are a number of posters here living on Fantasy Island, but to the original poster take the 90 minute estimate seriously. You don't want to be late for an interview.

FYI: I drive between Boston and Providence all the time (that's Boston proper, not Melrose), and I've NEVER been able to make it in less than 75 minutes, and that's on an extraordinarily good day. And, I typically travel at around 65-70 MPH.

Do yourself a favor and err on the side of more time.
