I know this has been covered before, but everyone has there own unique set of circumstances. Here are mine.

I might have the opportunity to move to the Providence area from Richmond, VA. Job is in Woonsocket.

Upside, my current field is dying (film developement) and this new position is with our "latest and greatest" technology, so much better job security.

Downside-Money, (no salary bump to move) about $44K, which in Richmond is good, I know it won't go as far in RI.

I have very little debt so I just need to make enough to be "comfortable"

I was thinking about renting in the Federal Hill area, it's very similar to the area of Richmond I currently live in, very walkable, good restaurants and shops. Can anyone recomend any other areas of town, I am not young or a "hipster" but I do like eclectic areas. Have seen some places for rent in FH for under $950 that are dog friendly and I know enough to ask about ulilities costs. Just not sure what areas are actually good, if it's anything like Richmond some times it goes block by block.

I have friends that live about 30 miles south of Boston, so that is another reason I am looking at this move.

So, am I crazy? If not any suggestions/information about the area would be great I have rambled enough, all help will be appreciated

Federal Hill is ok, very busy area, lots of aged housing; yes that area and the West Side/Broadway things do go block by block. Rents in Woonsocket are the cheapest in the state, don't know the area well but maybe there is pocket of decency amidst the decay? You could consider Lincoln and Cumberland too, or how about the Attleboros over the border in MA; is it North A. that many people love and find very walkable? Things aren't all that far away from each other so there are a lot of options for things to do.

I would say that Federal Hill is very walkable and you can easily walk downtown from there as well. It's also close to the East Side. Not much doing in the Cumberland & Lincoln area. Mostly suburbia. There are nice parts of Woonsocket but Federal Hill is much more happening in terms of being near things to do for a single.

Ha ha the differing opinions, hollytree is right if you really do want to be near the more happening areas. I would say FH is fairly walkable too except a couple people got hit crossing Atwells didn't they.

$45K isn't bad at all for around here. It's above the median individual income in many of the cities/towns here. What you will find to be more expensive is housing and (if ever applicable) often property taxes. But some of the little things are actually cheaper here.

If you want eclectic, Federal Hill certainly has that. You may also want to check out the East Side of Providence. (Not to be confused with East Providence.)

Default Thanks

Thanks for all the responses so far, all information makes this tough decision somewhat easier. Have been confused by the whole East side vs East Providence, is there a specific area/streets that "borders" the east side.

College Hill is basically the East side, with sort of the center of activity being around Thayer St. Once you get over to Main St. you're heading back toward the middle of the city.

The East Side runs from South Main street to Pawtucket on the north to the Seekonk River on the East and the river on the south. Sections of the East Side include Fox Point, College Hill, Wickenden St, Blackstone, Wayland Square, Mt Hope, Summit.
