All,

I currently live in the Boston area and am thinking of relocating to the Providence area. Specifically, I'd like to live in a community north of Providence (Smithfield, East Providence, Woonsocket, etc.) I'm not totally opposed to living in Providence itself, but I have heard some negative things about the city as far as crime. My budget would be no more than 1000 dollars a month. I'd be looking for a studio or a 1 bedroom apartment. Can anyone suggest towns that would fit this criteria, or tell me more about this general area? Thanks!

If you're moving over the border to try to get more space for rent money, I'd suggest Pawtucket- specifically the Fairlawn or Darlington sections. This area is an easy commute via the No Attleboro train to Boston. It is working class, features lots of vinyl siding and triple deckers, and is generally safe.

Cumberland, Smithfield, will be nicer but more money. Woonsocket very working class.

East Providence is a city east of Providence. Do you mean the east side of Providence? If so, your budget is low for this area- but it might get you a studio. This is by far the best area- search this forum for dozens of threads on the East Side.

You could find a one-bed on the East Side for less than 1K a month. As far as crime, you would have to go looking for it. Safety in Boston was more of a concern when I lived there, considering it is a much larger city.

Those 1 beds on the east side for less than $1000 are often in poor locations- you have to vet them street by street. Not just for crime, but for aesthetics.

The Rumford part of East Providence is decent - quiet and residential.

What kind of amenities are you looking for? And why come to RI for them? If you're going to continue to work in MA but just want to be closer to Providence, I would look into an MA town like Attleboro / North Attleboro.
