My family is considering a move to Rhode Island. We currently live in Silver Spring, MD. Our neighborhood is made up of single-family homes from the 30's and 50's. It is fairly diverse both racially and religiously. And walkable to stores and restaurants. We'd like some of these features in a new neighborhood, but don't think we can have it all. Can we?

We would be looking to spend in the neighborhood of $500,000 for our new home. I would be working in downtown Providence and hate having a long commute (currently have a 15-20 minute drive to work).

Private school is not an option for us. But a good public school system is a must.

We've spent a lot of time in the East Bay in the past, but we are curious about other areas.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Don't move to Rhode Island. The economy is horrible, the taxes and cost of living are both sky high, and it's going to get worse.

I think if schools are important you should judge towns/cities by school district first. Unless, you are open to private/catholic schools then you can move to the town/city that fits your wants the best.
