Regardless of the politicking this whole event provokes, I wish all of you the best with these changes.

I'm not saying this to slam Rhode Island (as I'm from there and still enjoy visiting as often as possible), but many natives just aren't inclined to visit other areas because they feel there isn't any other place worth exploring. My own relatives are a testament to that. Only one has made it out to visit me in any of the other states I've ever lived..
I'm curious as to why you believe that's a characteristic of Rhode Islanders, rather than of the specific people involved. Do you think that if you were born within the same family, but in Kentucky, that they'd be better travelled?

Most Americans live and die within the same five miles they were born. Not Rhode Islanders, Americans.

And I bet many who leave do soto take jobs with other people who travelled to take a job in that industry, skewing their perceptions? I'm sure most people in Silicon Valley are from somewhere else and they think the people from their hometown are stayers, whereas people in Silicon Valley are world travelers....

I was thinking about this some more and I think we've confused two separate issue - "travelling" and relocating. I think plenty of RI'ers travel.

But I can understand not wanting to relocate to a place where you know no one if your family and friends all live here. RI has strong extended families. Probably most of the people I knew in Coventry never moved out of Coventry - why would they if they liked it and their family was there? Leave everyone just for money? But all of them travel.

Then again, we all know what Emerson and Thoreau had to say about travel....

Not seeing that these policies have failed is the problem. At least some Democrats in some states are waking up to this reality. You can't pay for services without a robust private sector.
