Hey, you never know, maybe you'll actually enjoy having a car and zooming around.
Maybe.
...
It's my nature to look at the bright side of things only when all other options are thoroughly, completely exhausted. So yeah, maybe some good will come of it. I didn't realize that Manhattan is only 3hr 5 minutes away (that's what Google says, faster than Amtrak's slow and pokey Northeast Regional). Or the option of buying more food than can fit into a backpack. And let's be honest, the charms and ambiance of Kennedy Plaza at 11pm are far, far overrated, even by Rhode Island's high standards.
I just feel defeated, that's all -- I thought I could make it through life without ever owning a car, that I could make public transit work. I blame RIPTA, I really do.
Blame those who do not ride the buses for the problems with public transit.
At the same time, do look into the stops on the #14 bus that would take you to Quonset/Davisville. Unless they have altered the route, it makes a milkrun look like an express. It stops everywhere. 95 south to airport connector, stops at the airport, then takes post road ALL THE WAY through Warwick, EG, and down through NK. A bicycle might be faster.

Amen.

I've looked at it six ways from Sunday and the bus won't work, as it drops me off three miles from my new office. And a bike is great for the summer, but not so great when it rains or snows or is freezing.

Before you go car shopping, I have one more suggestion. There's the #65 Wakefield Express that runs non-stop from Kennedy Plaza to the Park-N-Ride at the intersection of Routes 2 and 102 in North Kingstown via I-95. Maybe you can get a ride between there and your office from one of your co-workers. One word of caution - Not all of the trips run non-stop, although the ones that don't make only one stop at CCRI-Warwick. Hope that helps.

I've ridden RIPTA since I moved to Rhode Island in 2001, and ever since then, RIPTA's ridership has steadily grown. The issue is that RIPTA has a structural funding problem that prevents it from increasing service, because when people drive less by taking transit, they buy less gas which lessens the amount of gas tax funding they receive. Legislative support, which is necessary to change the way RIPTA is funded, has been non-existent despite climbing ridership. Luckily, there has been a bill introduced this year that may fix the funding issue. You can read about it here and maybe contact your state official to ask for their support before the end of this year's session.
