Making a move to RI soon. Husband will be working in Providence and we're looking for homes in Portsmouth. I'm wondering what the commute is like going into Providence from Portsmouth. Any input would be great!

I'd allow a good 40-45 minutes depending on time of day. I used to go from Providence to Bristol- it was 35 min.

Well, like Holly says if you don't mind allowing for 40 mins each way
(although some drives will be less time, depending upon traffic)
then it's ok, if you really want to live in Portsmouth, which is very nice,
it's worth it.
The online maps will tell you to take 138 over to Fall River, then 195 West
to Prov... but I wouldn't go that way, I would cross the Mount Hope
Bridge into Bristol then ride 103 to 114 to 195 West at which point
you will be in Providence.

Thanks for the input! What can you guys tell me about Tiverton? Our main concern is to have good schools, family area, not too long of a commute to Providence (hubby says 45 min is fine), things to see and do close by and not too expensive for a family of 6. Portsmouth seems to fit the bill (and the views are amazing), but the houses are much smaller with what you can get elsewhere for the same price. We would also love to be near some bike/running paths if possible.

Tiverton has a more rural feel than Portsmouth. You should check out the entire
Aquidneck Island (the actual "Rhode Island") and East Bay towns.

Your biggest issue is the "good schools". If I were you, I'd bite the bullet and just do Barrington.

Keep an eye on the toll bridge situation. Tolls are starting on the Bridge from Tiverton to Bristol this month and they're even eyeing the Mt Hope bridge again. It's crazy and will affect commuters big time.
