So I am going to run similar threads to most of the east coast states. I currently have a worthless degree so I plan on studying accounting at the local community college and then go earn a masters in Accounting in an East Coast state. I just want to know what are the pros and cons of Rhode Island in your opinion. I just ask to please be civil and leave out politics. Taxes and such are fair game though.

You want to earn a masters in accounting in an east coast state? So your biggest concern is a college or a lifestyle?

My biggest concern is lifestyle. I live in the Chicago suburbs and work a part time job with odd hours. So, I get to do very little in terms of leisure. I can do things locally with friends, so that is about it. Going to Chicago is usually expensive and hard to do with my hours and in terms of nature, I have a manicured paved forest preserve. So not much to do unless I drive out a few hours to somewhere else. So I end up going out to drink a lot. Not a bad thing with friends, but a little more variety without accusations of alcoholism would be nice.

"a manicured paved forest preserve"....

Can I sheepishly ask what this is?

The best thing about RI are the beaches and Brown university!!!.... Go Brunos!

Sorry about the odd image, basically a forest, most likely man made with trimmed lawns and pruning over certain areas. Instead of actual hiking trails, its a paved asphalt path that run behind people's homes. The only good local forested area that isn't as "tamed" would be starved rock state park, which is nice but a hassle to get out there.

I know Rhode Island isn't known for forests but it does have the ocean which must be nice to have plus a lot of history. My local area has very few old buildings. Its mainly suburban architecture from the 50's to the present.

How interesting....I am sure these homes must be nice too.

I know you have the same question posed on the Mass site. I live in MA presently but had lived in RI for several years as a college student, and my heart is still in little RI. The beaches are beautiful and the people comically eclectic and unique. Sure you have your uneducated provincials, like anywhere else, but the smart and educated ones in RI are in a class of their own. I think even the Cantabrigians (those from Cambridge MA) cannot compare to them in terms of their unique way of thinking. H.P. Lovecraft's birthplace!

College Hill, East Side and the whole area around Blackstone boulevard are the best areas of Providence, RI. I am obviously biased by my own personal experience, but if I could move back to RI, I would do so in a heartbeat.

Both MA and RI are steep in history and culture. MA is bigger, more affluent overall and more economically developed. But RI is more quirky, unique and personable.

RI does have some nice forests out in the Western part of the state.

I lived in Chicago as well as Rhode Island.. I can't say enough about how nice it is to have an ocean nearby. I, too, worked odd hours when I dealt at a local casino. I would spend a lot of time sitting on the rocks on the coastline. Very soothing and relaxing. There is a great deal of history, and I also took one town at a time in RI and learned all I could about it, saw each town's highlights, etc. If I recall correctly, there are around 40 different towns, so if you are in to history, one a week will take you quite a few months. And the nice thing is it takes longer to get across Chicago than to get across RI, so it would be like exploring the different Chicago neighborhoods.. except you can explore EVERY area of RI.. not really any areas to 100% avoid as I remember there were in Chicago.

One of the benefits would be there are a large amount of colleges and universities to study at. Rhode Island has a wide variety of things to do including numerous night clubs, restaurants, and beaches. A lot of history, Massachusetts has more historical landmarks than any other state. Rhode Island is rather affordable, tucked between Boston and NYC which are both very expensive, but not very far away.
