The right to vote "perk" in RI is for anyone who declares RI as their primary residence. Absentee ballots do the remainder of the damage, a la Florida snowbirds.
To add insult to the injury most don't pay income tax to RI, yet they can vote to keep those RI pensions fat and juicy. If you live out of state long enough where you don't need to file taxes, you should not be able to vote there either. But then again you have illegals and dead people voting, and the same people voting 3 or 4 times in places like PVD. And to think a bunch of wing-nut tea baggers are asking for voter ID laws?
It's also interesting that the apartment dwellers without cars pay the least in any type of taxes to any state, yet are experts when it comes to RI taxes and how things are run in the entitlement state.

Total non-sequitur.
You are baiting me. It's a shame you don't have anything constructive to add to this discussion. That's one. Two, my landlord would collapse without rental payments -- how could he pay taxes without rental income? Third, ever hear of capital gains taxes? Didn't think so.
High taxes are one of the main causes of the high cost of living in RI as mentioned in every post on this thread is relative to most of the above posts as the reason for the high percentage of "cons" in the thread. Combine that with he fact that many in RI do not vote for one reason or another, or because they are not taxpayers is on topic.
RI has a long history of corrupt government and politicians on the dole, it is nothing new. There are politicians sitting in jail as we speak. The number of residents on welfare and other entitlement programs is not a secret and has always a major con for the state. The fact that numerous entitlements are doled out in RI is the reason why so many immigrants and welfare recipients are drawn to the state. It's not because RI has great restaurants or warm weather; it's because RI pays them very well not to work.
Evidenced by the posts on this small thread ... many have left, many are planning to leave, and unfortunately many cannot leave because of family ties or secure employment for the interim. Many keep second homes in FL and have a choice where to vote and where to pay taxes when the tax laws benefit them. All part of the topic of the pros and cons of RI.
I've lived in Rhode Island for ten years and love it here. (Moved from Florida, thank goodness.)
When my family comes up to visit they're jealous. My parents usually stay with us in the summers. (My mom can't handle the cold or they'd love to get out of the South for good.)

This says it perfectly and is without a doubt one of the biggest cons of the state. The phrase "an honest day's work for an honest day's pay" has all the validity of a $3 bill in RI.
