Yeah, Benefit Street doesn't make any sense from the perspective of the photographer. So it must be South Court Street frontage of the RISD studio building there.

You got it! I wonder how South Court St got its name -- anyone know?

The old state house served as a court at one time. I believe that South Court Street was named for being the street on the south side of the court, and the street to the north side of the court was naturally enough, called North Court Street.

Okay -- this is a three part question: where is it, what is it, and why is it?

Hollytree is right. Specifically, I believe it is at the intersection of Benefit St. and Jenckes. Jenckes is a very steep hill. Though I believe that you can't drive down hill toward Benefit on Jenckes, so perhaps it is to prevent cars driving up an ice-coated Jenckes from sliding back into the house!
