I was talking to a fellow dog owner in Prospect Park WAY too early this morning and she told me that Eastside Market has been sold to Stop and Shop. I haven't received my copy of the East Sider so I don't know if this is true -- does anyone know? I'd hate to see a monolithic Stop and Shop replace what is a quaint yet fully-stocked Eastside Market.

Nothing on the interwebs. Would be sad if it happens. Seems strange that Stop & Shop would open another store in close proximity to their Branch Ave and Wampanoag Mall locations.

They have done similar in other areas (in trying to monopolize the market). S+S is the 2nd worst chain after Shaws. You guys really need Market Basket and Hannaford down there.

Shaw's is pretty much history in RI - closed all but a few stores, and now someone else owns Shaw's anyway. I've noticed prices go down a bit since then. I do hear good things about Market Basket or Roche's in Mass, so that would be ok with me, but what I really want is for Dave's to move into Garden City. There's certainly enough room, down where Borders closed. Love Dave's for the produce and meat (buy the inner market stuff elsewhere though!) but it's pretty inconvenient to Providence.
I don't get how our grocery choices seem to get smaller over the years. I remember when Coventry had a Big G, IGA, Almacs, A&P and smaller marts. Then for years, it was just Stop and Shop for the whole town. Thank God for Dave's.

I agree on Dave's, it's probably the only real alternative left in RI. Used to hit the one in Warwick occasionally.

MB is going into South Attleboro near the train station/Pawtucket border and Diamond Hill Road, Woonsocket. MB might be on the move into Rhode island and the East Side Marketplace (formerly the First National location) would be an excellent location for their brand.

S&S will be fighting for its life! I couldn't get over the last time I was at a RI S&S in how high the prices were compared to my area of MA (due to the lack of competition). The only real players left in RI besides them are Walmart and Aldi (both whom fall way short on quality and selection).

Price Rite has a much better selection than Aldi's, not sure which has more stores. There are other players, just not on a huge chain scale - and that's ok too. I'd rather support a small business when I can.

I was just at Eastside over the weekend. I, too, will be said if it changes hands. I live in MA but spend most of my time in RI, including my food shopping, so I'm well familiar with the area and IMO, that area has more of a neighborhood feel and certainly not for a chain like S&S. I mean, even look at the Whole Foods that is right down the street, they knew to make it a smaller version to fit into this area.
I agree about Dave's Market. None are close for me yet I will make the trek to EG or Smithfield if they're having a good sale. They can be a tad bit pricey but when they have a sale, their sales are really really good.
Has anyone tried Belmont Market? I realize it's not local to the area we're talking about (it's in Wakefield) but one of these days, I plan on checking it out. I believe it's a single store like Eastside is.
