My favorite thing to do when traveling is just to walk around little towns and see what the hell I find. What are some cool, nice little towns I can just wander around when I am in RI? Also at least a couple coastal towns with some nice little boardwalks and salt water taffy shops? Thanks guys!

Newport (definitely), Jamestown, Bristol, and Wickford all come to mind. I don't think any of them have boardwalks, though...

Many of the Newport "touristy" shops will have closed for the season.. I second Wickford, and Main St. East Greenwich has some nice little shops.

The Fantastic Umbrella Factory in Charlestown is a neat place that should still be open for the season. However, there's not much else in Charlestown...

Go check out Water Street in Warren and the Downtown area if you find time.

The shops in Galilee generally close right after Labor Day but frequently are open during good weather on weekends for a few weeks. Whether the taffy shop will be open this week is a good guess.
I'm from NJ, but lived in RI for nearly 30 years. I tried finding a boardwalk anywhere in the RI/CT/Ma area and there isn't one like what NJ had all my life until Superstorm Sandy destroyed a few and then was helped by a nasty fire.
Wickford has a wonderful downtown area great for walking. If you want to be near the beaches, head to Narragansett or even Westerly.
